Re: Request for protection of Kituwah Valley and surrounding mountains

I, <YOUR FULL NAME HERE>, <YOUR TITLE HERE>((EX: "CITIZEN OF EBCI" OR "CONCERNED CITIZEN OF SWAIN COUNTY", ETC)) respectfully request your assistance in saving the Kituwah Valley in Swain County, North Carolina from power substations and future development. As of this moment, Duke Energy is building a substation right beside Cherokee ceremonial mounds. This is a protected site. Kituwah Mounds is on the National Register of Historic Places and many believe Duke is acting illegally. No permits were filed for the substation and no archaeological survey was done. Kituwah is still an active Cherokee ceremonial site.. From the MOUNDS ,UP TO AND INCLUDING the mountains surrounding this area. In our opinion, The Hyatt Creek Substation/Tie Station in Bryson City, North Carolina is a desecration to sacred land. Those who use this place for religious purpose are especially concerned about the current and future development of the Kituwah Valley, and future development IS PLANNED for this area.

In addition to the religious, historical, and ceremonial significance of Kituwah Valley, I believe that the natural biodiversity of this area is of great importance. The southeastern woodlands, especially in Western North Carolina, is one of the most diverse regions in the entire world and I feel it is a natural treasure worth protecting. If this place is lost, it will be gone forever.

I would appreciate your support by looking into this matter and helping to stop current and future development of the Kituwah Valley on the basis of it's historical, religious, and environmental importance.

I hope that you will recognize the need for the immediate protection of the Kituwah Valley. We need as much help as possible.
