Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, is in danger! E-mail

Duke Energy is attempting to build a $52 million dollar substation near the Kituwah Cherokee ceremonial mounds. Construction of the Hyatt Creek Substation/Tie Station in Bryson City, NC at the Kituwha traditional, cultural and sacred grounds is a desecration to historic properties.

 

Update: On Tuesday, March 9th the Swain County Commissioners passed a  a 90 day moratorium on construction of the Duke Energy substation. (Read more)


On February 4, 2010, the Tribal Council passed a resolution stating, "“It is this Tribe’s solemn responsibility and moral duty to care for and protect all of Kituwah from further desecration and degradation by human agency in order to preserve the integrity of the most important site for the origination and continuation of Cherokee culture, heritage, history and identity.” (Read the article)
